7 Things To Do in the Winter in Boyd County, KY

Feb 7, 2024

While the winter chill remains in the air, we encourage you to take advantage of our multitude of indoor adventures. From local events, to mouthwatering dining options, to family-friendly activities – we’ve got it all. If you’re unsure of how to spend the colder months here in Boyd County, allow us to assist you in creating your winter itinerary.

To Be or Not to Be…At the Theater

Experience an evening at the Paramount Arts Center. The Paramount Theater first opened in 1931 and was used to showcase motion pictures. Now, the center aims to both educate and inspire the community with the use of theatrical entertainment and performing arts.  Shows range from comedy nights, to fan favorite plays, to well-known musical artists. Whether you’re a seasoned thespian looking to enjoy quality entertainment or a novice to the arts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Shop Til’ You Drop

While planning your indoor excursions, be sure to stroll through local shops such as the Camayo Arcade. Camayo Arcade is a historic shopping arcade that can be found along Winchester Avenue in Downtown Ashland. Here, shoppers can travel back in time as they explore Kentucky’s first indoor mall.  Don’t let the fun stop here, continue to fill your bags with goods from local stores such as Holly B’s Jewelry, Pretty and Poised Apparel, and the Local Mercantile.

A Bookworm’s Paradise

While on your shopping spree, head over to one of the local favorite bookstores such as Broadway Books or The Jesse Stuart Foundation Book Store. Take your pick of classic novels, romantic reads, or adventure stories sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. After all, sometimes the best way to spend a day indoors is curled up under a blanket with a good book.

For the History Buff

Looking for a blast from the past? You’re in luck! Boyd County is home to both the C.B. Nuckolls Black History Museum and the Highland’s Museum and Discovery Center. Each venue provides a unique way for visitors to dive into the history of Boyd County. Take advantage of interactive learning opportunities and become fully immersed in the vibrant displays of rich cultural happenings.  While in the area, the Catlettsburg Floodwall Murals are a must-see! In 1999, the city of Catlettsburg recruited Beverly St. Lawrence – an artist out of Huntington – to help develop the area by bringing art to the floodwall, similar to that in Portsmouth, Ohio.  The murals include depictions of Thomas R. Brown High School, a former school in the area built in 1910, as well as a portrait of Billy C. Clark, an author native to the city.
